The first orbiter was originally planned to be named Constitution, but a massive write-in campaign from fans of the Star Trek television series convinced the White House to change the name to Enterprise. That was because the Star Trek series took place aboard the Starship Enterprise NX-01, Earth's first warp-5-capable ship, which had been designed for long-range exploration of the galaxy.
