As a response to the United States Space Shuttle program, the Soviet Union started the Buran program. The program began in 1974 and was formally suspended in 1993. The only orbital launch of Buran was on November 15th, 1988. The unmanned craft was lifted into orbit by a booster rocket. The shuttle orbited the Earth twice and performed an automated landing at Baikonur Cosmodrome.
